Most lists of weekend getaways near Mumbai within 100 km give you fifty places and no help choosing. Here are the three main belts out of the city, what each one is actually like, and what happens when your family picks a favourite.

Why distance on a map lies to Mumbai families

If you live in Mumbai or Thane, a 90 km drive can take ninety minutes or four hours. Everything depends on which toll naka you cross and what time you leave on Saturday morning.

When people look for weekend getaways near Mumbai within 100 km, what they really want is a drive that does not exhaust the kids before lunch. Out of Mumbai, you have three real choices by direction: northeast towards Nashik, southeast towards Pune, or south towards the coast.

Each belt has a different road, a different crowd, and a different best season.

Towards Nashik: Shahapur, Atgaon, Khardi and Kasara

If you live in Thane, Mulund, Bhandup, Powai, or the eastern suburbs, getting onto the Mumbai to Nashik Expressway is the easiest exit out of the city. You are on open highway fast, without fighting south Mumbai or Navi Mumbai bottlenecks.

This belt is defined by dams, rivers, forests, and the Sahyadri hills rising up towards the ghats. Shahapur is about 90 minutes from Mumbai depending on traffic, and the towns beyond it sit a little further up the same highway.

When you visit the same weekend belt six times a year, paying resort bills and checking out at 11 am starts to make very little sense.

Towards Pune: Karjat, Matheran and Lonavala

Head out via Panvel and you enter the oldest weekend belt near Mumbai. Karjat and Neral sit at the base of the hills, Matheran is perched above them, and Lonavala sits up on the expressway ghat.

How long it takes depends heavily on where you start and whether the ghat section is backed up. From Navi Mumbai, or from south Mumbai over the Atal Setu, the reach is quick on a clear morning. On a wet Sunday evening, the return crawl from Lonavala is famous for the wrong reasons.

Towards the coast: Alibaug, Mandwa and Kashid

If your family prefers salt air to hills, the Raigad coast is your belt. For decades, going to Alibaug meant a long road trip around Pen and Wadkhal Naka.

Now, most Mumbai families take the ferry or the RoRo boat from Ferry Wharf to Mandwa and drive the last stretch. By road, the drive still depends on highway works and traffic through the towns.

Why families stop booking resorts and pick one belt

Watch any Mumbai family over three or four years. First, they try a new resort every few months across all three belts. Then they realise they hate packing from scratch, checking in at 2 pm, and checking out at 11 am just when everyone is relaxed.

Most families eventually settle on the one belt that is easiest to reach from their home neighbourhood. Once you go to the same belt six times a year, paying weekend resort bills starts to feel wasteful.

Look at the simple math. If a family of four or six books a good two or three bedroom pool villa for a weekend, the bill with food and travel rarely leaves much change from ₹35,000 to ₹50,000. Do that seven or eight times a year and you are spending ₹3 lakh to ₹4 lakh with nothing to show on Monday.

That is usually the moment people start looking at owning a place of their own along their favourite highway.

What to do next time you drive out

Next time you plan one of these weekend getaways near Mumbai within 100 km, treat the drive as a test. Notice how long it actually takes from your building gate, not from the city boundary. Notice whether you feel rested when you get back on Sunday night.

If the Mumbai to Nashik belt is the one that works for your family, come see how we build and run our communities there. At Shahapur, our flagship riverfront project has customisable 2 to 5 bedroom pool villas starting at ₹1.25 Cr onwards, with only the last 10 units left. In the same community, we have fully managed Glass Resort Suites (MahaRERA PR1330002500101), and further up the highway we build at Atgaon, Khardi, Kasara, and Igatpuri. Registration details for our other projects are shared on request.

Every Shahapur villa has its own private pool, clear title on sanctioned land, and 24 hour security. Because we manage the community and run a rental programme where your villa can earn for you when you are not using it, owning a weekend home feels like checking into a resort, except the keys are yours.
